JEWEL OF INDIA

We are completely won over with the dining room at Lakshman Sagar hotel in Rajasthan. Designers Sarthak Sengupta and Sahil Bagga's aim was to move away from gilt and grandeur towards a lower-key scheme. However, the richness of colour traditional to Indian design remains, and we'll certainly be taking inspiration from the intense pinks and blues. Read more

A must visit winter destination in India - Arabian Gazette

Wondering where to go this New Year’s? Head straight to India and look at this gem in the lap of nature–Lakshman Sagar
Genre: Romantic, Luxury, Nature Retreat
Lakshman Sagar Frontal
Just a day before the trip, I realized that I might have limited access to Internet and phones. I was wondering why I agreed to visit the ‘badlands’ of India’s Rajasthan.
Little did I know that approach road to this rocky terrain would be better than most city roads. Little did I know that the smiles of the people will eat into my apprehensions. Neither did I know that this would be one trip that I am going to cherish for a long, long time.
Glad that I agreed to be here and glad that I have the opportunity to share my experiences with my readers.
I was growing impatient and wanted at least a small glimpse of the building. After all, I was already two hours into my road journey from Ajmer railway station. My research revealed that it was a Marwar heritage property that was used by the erstwhile 29th-century rulers as their hunting lodge.
There is some sort of serenity attached with the property. The main buildings of the property stand intact, proudly, in their historical glory. The women’s’ quarters are painted in candyfloss pink while that of the men’s is in manly yet pleasant blue.
Times moves at its own pace here. You can choose to head for an early morning walk, trying to spot some harmless wildlife and mostly birds. I did compete with a tortoise before deciding to head to the groundnut farms.
While my stay was for two nights, I recommend you to park yourself for atleast 3-4 nights to do complete justice to the place. You are spoilt for choice—it is difficult to decide whether to go and have breakfast in the fields, or go birdwatching, or settle for a royal spa in the comforts of your bright and lively cottage or enjoy a dip in the attached private pool.
Afternoons can be a bit boring if the sun is shining bright out there. But, we strictly recommend that you should head out to the local market, check out the local produce, indulge in some delicacies and savouries that form a part of the street food. You could also sit back in the cottage and play some traditional Indian games that are equivalent to the modern day Ludo or chess.
I decided to give all this a miss and call for a village girl to apply some henna on my hands. After all, the region has one of the best Henna farms of the world. Satisfied at the traditional Indian tattoo, I headed to meet the potter. Complete with a potter’s wheel, we spent the afternoon creating beautiful clay utensils. Who needs to be on Facebook when there are so many activities that can engage you and your mind? And the resultant creativity is food for the soul?
That is not all, towards the evening, you should head to this crater-style common pool that has warm water from the afternoon sun. Don’t forget to run straight to the high-walled terrace lounge right next to this pool. Sunset and star-gazing experiences from here are unbelievable. Living in a city, you would never know that nature has so much to offer.
Wondering what kind of food is served here? The chefs are right there to cook food according to your liking. However, when in Rome, do as Romans. Eat the local food, Dal Baati Choorma, Gatte ki Sabzi, Laal Maas and Ker Sangeri. Trust us, the food will not disappoint you. After all, it is organically grown right there in the resort premises. Lake-facing cottage at Lakshman Sagar, near Pali

A former hunting lodge, this design hotel in Rajasthan is settled around the man-made lake Lakshman Sagar. The lake-facing cottage offers uninterrupted views of the placid waters, whether you’re in the private splash pool or under the covers in bed. Inside too, design duo Sahil & Sarthak’s ingenious adaptation of daily objects makes the room delightfully local: a wind chime installation uses brass objects of everyday life here, like lotas and belans, and pop-coloured traditional textiles offset the earthy tones of the architecture.

Lakshman Sagar has been featured in Asianage

Sarthak Sengupta of Sarthak Sahil Design Co. tells us why traditional materials and Indian craft practices are intrinsic to their ideas
When Sahil Bagga and Sarthak Sengupta returned to India from Italy after studying design, they decided that they didn’t just want to cater to an existing market or design contemporary spaces. They wanted to change the way we consumed lighting and understood interior design. And while doing so, they wanted to use materials that were not only functional but some that found their roots in traditional Indian crafts.
In keeping with that dream, Sahil and Sarthak have been consciously working towards creating lighting products and installations since 2009 — the year they set up their design practice. Sarthak says, “We wanted to create products that were global in nature but local in spirit. Our instincts told us the definition of luxury was changing internationally. We wanted to be the front-runners at least in India — to cater to a market that believed in luxury with a conscience.”
This philosophy has found its way right from their first major project — the Lakshman Sagar Resort in Rajasthan — which is one of their most published projects till date. Since the resort is located near Raipur, the two recreated an ambience “that is inspired by the region, and made with materials that are found abundantly in that region.” Calling it the “Zero Kilometre Design”, Sarthak says, “We documented craft practices, rituals and customs, objects, farming tools and vessels, in order to capture the true spirit of the land. These were then reinterpreted into modern day objects such as light fixtures and furniture that adorn the interior of this resort.” Read more

Rustic Luxury and Slow living in Rural Rajasthan - Lovelifeandstyle

Lakshman Sagar is without doubt the most incredible, beautiful, relaxing hotel I have ever had the pleasure of staying in. I know that is quite a remarkable statement to make but I honestly felt a million miles from reality there, it is breathtakingly beautiful.

Lakshman Sagar is part of the Sewara Slow Living group, a secluded resort set around a private lake and a 19th-century hunting lodge in Raipur, rural Rajasthan.
Let’s just take a moment to appreciate this extraordinary swimming pool, cut out from the side of a mountain. It doesn’t get better than this.

With 12 beautiful cottages spread over 32 acres along a man-made lake, each mud and stone cottage offers privacy in a stunning, serene setting. Influenced by indigenous Rajasthani architecture, the rooms are designed with luxurious simplicity in mind; striking designs coupled with quaint, rustic touches. The private plunge pools offer spectacular views of the lake where you’ll hear all kinds of birds and see wildlife rustling around in the trees. I spent hours lounging on the day beds reading a book, having a little snooze and cooling off in the pool; blissful living.
The cottages are also quite large and come complete with a rustic bathroom and a bright lounge area with views over the lake. It is the perfect setting to relax, reconnect and just live in the moment.

LODI - THE GARDEN RESTAURANT

Opp. Mausam Bhavan, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, Delhi 110003, India

Monday 9 November 2015

Fit of quintessential luxury, every diner needs to experience  — Lodi - The Garden Restaurant

For starters the place is brandished for romantic dates and lazy brunches and lives up to the expectations by throwing itself on you with its view of the attached Lodhi Gardens. For people who don’t know about the Lodi Gardens; the iconic gardens are known for its monuments and streams adjacent to very own posh frequent visit of the elite, Khan Market. On the very first glance you notice the hanging lights and the carts paving your way into the open air restaurant with the host expressing her delight as she expected to see us in the evening.

Upon entering and finding us a perfect spot offering assistance in ordering, the service hints towards diligent knowledge. The First two suggestions which were happily accepted, sesame coated deep fried scampi prawns with sweet chilli relish ( INR 525) and pickled chilli stuffed with goat cheese and thyme mousse (INR 395) was a good start. Where the prawns were fresh and gave a good lead for a bland palate, the goat cheese and the subdued pickled chilli and goat cheese did delight with the rich creaminess. A good start.

We ordered cold fumes ( INR 225) a good kick of ginger, lemon and orange with lime, however on the sweeter side with a dash of Vodka and cool buzz a non alcoholic fruity buzz of blueberries which added the balance to otherwise heavier starters.

Delightfully moving with the Poached Pears salad with goat cheese with melon and olive oil dressing (not mentioned on the menu but a seasonal addition) was crisp and dressing spoke volumes of chefs research on the balanced dressing of a classic English salad.
From the salad and keeping in the mind the fresh produce for the menu concept the next on the table was the catch of the day, touted as exquisite, we were served a bassa fillet (INR 895)(this is the widest farmed catch hence the idea of exquisite is not the most convincing one) with capers and lemon sauce, nothing special about the prep nonetheless did contain the taste and flavours of a fresh fish and capers sauce, and did lack a bit of texture.

The fish was followed with soup of the day, asparagus soup with roasted garlic and walnuts which chef had forgotten to offer before the fish. asparagus soup(INR 365) — tasting of fresh vegetables, was buttery and garlic would have ensured asking for a refill however the walnuts smelled a little too funny and restricted a second serving.

However the dining experience peaked with the mains with fresh rosemary quinoa with butter nut squash and seasonal veggies ( 695), Pumpkin ravioli in burnt butter and sage (INR 595) and braised lamb shoulder in rosemary and red wine jus served with the peppers and egg plant grilled on sides. The mains were prepared with the sworn oath of recipes followed with utter discipline. Where quinoa retained its texture, the vegetables added crunch and a lot of moisture to the otherwise granular preparation. The ravioli had internalised the sage and burnt butter combination, adding a lot of country side flavours to so far polished city meal. The classical moroccan braise had great texture and mutton did offer itself in tender form however the wine and rosemary jus could have used more seasoning. The Grilled pepper and egg plant was tastier than the lamb.

We have had satisfied ourselves with the meal so far and with already full stomach were contemplating to whether to go or not for the desserts. The manager did manage to convince us(fortunately) by confessing his love for the Almond bread pudding with fig ice cream and toffee sauce(he pops a piece every now of then of the pudding himself) (INR 395) And Fresh Fruits in orange liqueur and whipped cream (INR 295) Where the pudding was balanced and not overtly sweet the toffee was warm to compliment the creation perfectly. The orange liqueur shone bright between the fruits.
Well we do recommend people to add this amazing garden restaurant on their list of special dates and times when they would love to experience the time tested recipes and a setting which is one of its kind.To read more

Amarrass Nights at Lodi with The Lakha~Madou

Amarrass Records is thrilled to present THE LAKHA~MADOU PROJECT that brings together two ancient desert instruments - the sindhi sarangi (in the hands of the master and living legend LAKHA KHAN) and the kora (the African lute harp, played by 71st generation Malian musician MADOU SIDIKI DIABATÈ). In the hands of these masters, a never-before-heard combination of instruments weaves a magical tapestry of soundscapes. A very special project, the seeds for which were sown at the first Amarrass Music Festival in Nov 2011 in New Delhi (when the two met briefly and collaborated on a jam with Vieux Farka Tourè and Barmer Boys).

Lakha Khan is the undisputed master of the sindhi sarangi, a 27 stringed bowed string instrument from the Indian desert state of Rajasthan. At 68, he is a living legend, described as "a real treasure" (Songlines). Madou, from Bamako, Mali is a virtuoso of the kora, a 20 string African lute harp and in his hands the kora "sounds not of this world at all. His rippling, harp-like arpeggios and dizzyingly complex interlocking melodies seem to descend on warm wings from a yearning heaven of billowing, fragrant heat." (The WIRE: Adventures in Modern Sound Magazine).

Jia Singh, wellness consultant, nutritionist, food & travel writer chronicles her experience at Lakhsman Sagar

My friend Tanvi and I travelled to Lakshman Sagar with two other journalists from Delhi. We took the Shatabdi from Delhi and then had someone pick us up and drive us to the resort. When we arrived at Lakshman Sagar, it was pretty warm but we couldn’t get over how far removed we had managed to get ourselves from the rest of the world.
Upon looking through a pair of binoculars, I could see a herd of nilgai with babies, some resident birds and shrub and sand everywhere. I found out that Lakshman Sagar used to be a 19th century hunting lodge that had been converted into an eco resort. Spread over 32 acres along the man-made lake, the resort has 12 cottages that have been meticulously planned and conceptualised by architects, Vasant & Revathi Kamat and designer duo Sahil & Sarthak. The resort is effortlessly stylish and chic with a blend of traditional Rajasthani elements, beautiful installations and elements of eco and slow living to round off the experience.

DSC_0316
The cottages at the resort are divided into two clusters, with six 900 sq mt cottages on either side of the lake. We had cottage number 9 which was a bit of a walk to get to but perched at a beautiful height. Every photograph we took from the pool was absolutely spectacular. The cottage was fully furnished with a mini bar, nespresso machine and nibbles. The bathroom is gorgeous and stocked with the latest amenities and ‘multani mitti’ to whip into a face pack and rose water to cleanse your face.

DSC_0303
Based on the concept of ‘slow food’ the cuisine served at Lakshman Sagar is the traditional cuisine of the vicinity and includes special traditional hunting recipes of the Raipur Family. The dining experience combines freshest seasonal ingredients that are locally grown or sourced.Touted as one of the hidden gems of Rajasthan, the picture perfect surrounding of Lakshman Sagar not only make it a perfect romantic destination but also a place to disconnect from the hustle bustle of the city life. The food at the resort is delicious, satisfying and makes you nostalgic because it tastes like home. Breakfast is typically eggs (any style), porridge or muesli, fruits and coffee. You can choose to make yourself an espresso from the Nespresso machine in the cottage or opt for a french press coffee. The masala tea that they serve at breakfast and tea time is absolutely divine with just the right amount of cinnamon and cardamom. Lunch is vegetarian with a focus on organic greens and veggies that come from the farm. The resort tries to serve traditional rajasthani fare at lunch time with a choice of veggies, raita or yoghurt and a dessert. If you are avoiding wheat or are gluten intolerant- you can ask for rice or millet rotis. Dinner can be served to you in the room, courtyard by the lake or at the restaurant. It typically starts with a soup and some tikkas or barbeque followed by either a traditional non vegetarian thali or laal maas and its accompaniments. 80% of the clientele that visits Lakshman Sagar are from overseas and can’t eat spicy food so the spices have been tempered for the guests. If you feel like eating a fiery hot curry you can request the kitchen and order it separately to your room or your private dining venue.

Make sure to carry some warm clothes in the winter as Rajasthan, particularly the dessert gets really really cold. Read more

Water Retreats to Escape To Before Summer Ends

Ten Second Takeaway

It’s been a hot couple of months and there’s still a couple of them left. With some long weekends on the calendar, we are going on a lake resort trail… only because the beach is too far away.

Cottages dot either side of the man-made lake, Lakshman Sagar and each open upto a splashing pool of their own. Boy, can we only imagine the champagne flowing on a romantic break here. The neighbouring village has inspired each cottage, but not one is identical to the other. Outside, the pools overlook the lake while inside, the interiors are something else-with brass vessels and accoutrements that reflect the local culture of Rajasthan. You can go in for local liquor tasting, star gazing or simply chilling by the rock-cut pool.
