LAKHA KHAN (Rajasthan, India) - a living legend and the undisputed master of the sindhi sarangi, Lakha Khan is a national treasure. A Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner for his contribution to Rajasthani folk music, and perhaps the greatest exponent of the sindhi sarangi. He was born in the village of Raneri in Jodhpur district, Rajasthan, India into a family of traditional musicians from the Manganiyar community. He was trained at an early age by his father Tharu Khan and later, by his uncle Mohammad Khan, in rendering the compositions of the Multan school of Manganiyars. His first public performances were in the late 60's and 70's under the guidance of the late Komal Kothari, a highly regarded Indian historian and ethnomusicologist. Today, Lakha Khan is one of the last remaining Manganiyars to have mastered this complex instrument and to carry forward the centuries-old musical tradition of Rajasthani and Multani folk and Sufi music.

Amarrass Nights at Lodi with The Lakha~Madou

Amarrass Records is thrilled to present THE LAKHA~MADOU PROJECT that brings together two ancient desert instruments - the sindhi sarangi (in the hands of the master and living legend LAKHA KHAN) and the kora (the African lute harp, played by 71st generation Malian musician MADOU SIDIKI DIABATÈ). In the hands of these masters, a never-before-heard combination of instruments weaves a magical tapestry of soundscapes. A very special project, the seeds for which were sown at the first Amarrass Music Festival in Nov 2011 in New Delhi (when the two met briefly and collaborated on a jam with Vieux Farka Tourè and Barmer Boys).

Lakha Khan is the undisputed master of the sindhi sarangi, a 27 stringed bowed string instrument from the Indian desert state of Rajasthan. At 68, he is a living legend, described as "a real treasure" (Songlines). Madou, from Bamako, Mali is a virtuoso of the kora, a 20 string African lute harp and in his hands the kora "sounds not of this world at all. His rippling, harp-like arpeggios and dizzyingly complex interlocking melodies seem to descend on warm wings from a yearning heaven of billowing, fragrant heat." Sindhi Sarangi maestro Lakha Khan live @ Lodi – The Garden Restaurant

We welcome back Sindhi Sarangi maestro Lakha Khan, accompanied by his son Dane Khan on dholak for a special pre-tour concert in Delhi as they embark on their second US Tour this October. The tour supports the launch of his new album "Lakha Khan: Live in Nashville". The album features a live recording from his debut US tour in 2013, with renditions of popular folk classics such as Kesariya Balam and Mast Qalandar, Sufi kalaams by Ghulam Farid and Bulleh Shah, Kabir bhajans and classical ragas.

Described as a "a real treasure" in Songlines Magazine by Simon Broughton (editor, Rough Guide to World Music, Songlines Magazine), Lakha Khan is the last of the great masters from the Manganiar community (also known as the Merasi) to represent a centuries old musical tradition through his repertoire of songs, sung in several languages and dialects, and his command of the sarangi - the instrument of a hundred (sa or sau) colours (rangi).
